The voucher in the drawer still assumes a year this year refused to be. Hold it up to the closed months before the next one goes out.

The estimate problem inside a lumpy year

Quarterly estimates are a calendar. They are also a picture of a year. If last year was even and this year put half the profit into one shipping stretch, an estimate built only on last year's shape can be "met" and still leave a painful balance when the return is done. The cash may be sitting in fruit, or it may already have left for a settlement. Neither fact is visible in a prior-year worksheet that nobody updated.

One common safe harbor looks back at last year's tax. It does not look at the truck that arrived in March. If this year is heavier, you can satisfy a look-back rule and still feel ambushed in April, because the rule was never a promise that the bill would match the cash. We would rather put the heavy quarter on the estimate calendar while you can still choose what to send, and while a retirement contribution or a timing decision can still be real.

It has snowed here twice since 1941, once on Christmas Day in 2004 and once in December 2017. A Valley owner treats snow as a rumor until it is in the yard. Estimates deserve the same skepticism. A number that made sense in a normal year is a rumor until you hold it up to this year's closed months.

What a useful estimate meeting covers

We start from the months that tie, not from a percentage someone likes. Owner pay, a planned equipment buy, and a quarter you already know is coming get a place on the page. The dollar amount of the voucher is not something this page can know. That figure needs your file. What we will say is whether the current plan still fits the year you are actually having, and what would have to be true for it to fit.

Underpayment is a boring penalty and an expensive way to learn that the year changed. Avoiding it is not a personality trait. It is a calendar with the fat quarter drawn on it. If the books are three months behind, the estimate conversation waits. Guessing from an open month is how a careful person sends the wrong amount with confidence.

Cash is not the same as the quarter

A buyer can owe you for fruit that has already been booked, and a broker can pay you for fruit that belongs in last month. The estimate that follows the bank balance alone will be early or late. The estimate that follows the closed books has a chance. This is the same discipline as the sales tax return. One picture of the year, used everywhere, including the payment you send in for yourself.

Where the estimates stand
